Free & unlimited
FreeCoder's free models
FreeCoder ships with a free, built-in set of AI models — no API key, no sign-up, no credit card, and no usage limits. They're the default the moment you open the app, so you can start coding in seconds without wiring up a provider or pasting a key. This is the heart of what makes FreeCoder a genuinely free, unlimited AI coding agent.
What the free-model service is
Think of it as a managed model layer we run for you. Instead of asking you to create accounts, buy credits, and juggle keys across providers, FreeCoder maintains a hand-picked set of capable models and serves them through its own secure endpoint. You get the experience of a paid coding assistant — good models, ready instantly — with none of the setup, cost, or limits.
A curated lineup, tuned for coding
These aren't random models. They're chosen specifically for coding agents — good at reading a codebase, planning a change, editing files, and running tools. We keep the list current so you always have reliable, coding-optimized options without having to research or benchmark anything yourself. The lineup includes well-regarded open models such as:
- Llama 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and Llama 4 — Meta's strong general-purpose and coding models, from fast 8B options to large 70B+ variants.
- Qwen 3 — high-capability models that punch above their weight on reasoning and code.
- NVIDIA Nemotron — tuned for instruction-following and agentic work.
- Mistral Mixtral — a fast mixture-of-experts model.
- Microsoft Phi-4 — a compact model that's quick for everyday edits.
- OpenAI gpt-oss (20B & 120B) — OpenAI's open-weight models.
Open the model menu in the app to see the full, current list — each one is labelled Free.
Genuinely free, genuinely unlimited
- No API key. Nothing to create, paste, or manage.
- No sign-up and no card. There's no FreeCoder subscription of any kind.
- No usage caps. Use them as much as you like — a small, unobtrusive ad is what keeps them free.
Routed securely through FreeCoder
When you use a free model, your request routes through FreeCoder's own secure proxy — that's how we can offer it with no key of your own. Your prompts go to the model and the response streams straight back; you never hand us a provider key, and nothing about your machine or setup is exposed. As with any AI coding assistant, only the code snippets needed to answer your request leave your computer — your files stay local, and you approve every action the agent takes.
How to use them
You don't have to do anything — the free models are already selected when you open FreeCoder. To switch between them:
- Open the model menu in the composer (or run
freecoder models). - Pick any model in the “Free models provided by FreeCoder” section.
- FreeCoder remembers your choice between sessions, so you only set it once.
Bigger models (the 70B+ Llama and Qwen options) are stronger on gnarly refactors and multi-step reasoning; smaller ones are faster for quick edits. Mix and match per task.
Prefer your own model?
You're never locked in. Alongside the free models, you can connect any of 50+ providers with your own key — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and more — and switch per task. Free by default, yours by choice. See Bring your own model for how, and Is it safe? for how FreeCoder handles your code.
FAQ
Are FreeCoder's free models really free?
Yes. The built-in models are free and unlimited — no account, no credit card, and no token caps. They're funded by a single small ad, not by charging you or selling your data.
Do I need an API key or account to use them?
No. The free models are the default the moment you open FreeCoder. There's nothing to sign up for, create, or paste — you can start coding in seconds.
Which models are included?
A curated, coding-focused lineup that we keep current — including Llama 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and Llama 4, Qwen 3, NVIDIA Nemotron, Mistral Mixtral, Microsoft Phi-4, and OpenAI's open gpt-oss models. You pick any of them from the model menu.
Are there any usage limits?
No hard caps. Use the free models as much as you like. A small, unobtrusive ad is what keeps them free and unlimited.
Is my code private when I use the free models?
Your files stay on your machine — only the snippets needed to answer your request are sent to the model, the same as any AI coding assistant. Requests route through FreeCoder's secure proxy, and you never hand over a provider key of your own.
How are the free models funded?
By a single small ad in the app. That's the whole business model — it's why the models can be free and unlimited without a subscription or your data being sold.
Can I use my own model instead?
Yes. Alongside the free models you can connect any of 50+ providers — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and more — with your own API key, and switch per task. See Bring your own model.
Which free model should I pick?
Any of them work well for coding. Larger models (e.g. the 70B+ Llama and Qwen options) are stronger on complex reasoning and refactors; smaller ones are faster for quick edits. FreeCoder remembers your choice between sessions.
