Bring your own model

Out of the box, FreeCoder uses a free, unlimited built-in model — no key, no setup, no limits. But you're never locked in. Prefer a specific model, or want requests to go through your own account for privacy or credits? Bring your own key.

The free default

Do nothing and you get the built-in model, free and uncapped (a small ad keeps it that way). It's the fastest path to coding and it's great for the vast majority of work.

Use your own provider

Add a provider key and pick any model it offers:

freecoder providers # connect a provider / set a key
freecoder models # list and choose a model

With your own key, requests go directly to that provider under your own account — useful if you already have credits, need a specific frontier model, or want to route traffic through your own infrastructure.

Switch per task

  • Use the free built-in model for everyday work.
  • Switch to a frontier model for a particularly gnarly refactor.
  • Mix and match — FreeCoder remembers your choice between sessions.
Free by default, yours by choice. There's no subscription to FreeCoder either way.
